Hiking Isthmus Peak - New Zealand's South Island Hidden Gem

The awe-inspiring Isthmus Peak is a lesser-known gem offering breathtaking views that will blow your mind from start to finish. Let's dive into all the details to help you make the most of your journey.

Getting There:

Isthmus Peak is nestled in the beautiful town of Wanaka on New Zealand's South Island. The trailhead isn't the easiest to see (the small sign is on a long road that is very easy to miss), so we used All Trails to find the start. You can find the All Trails link here which will give you all the details.

The Hike:

Isthmus Peak's track is a challenging 16km round trip with an elevation of 1,149 metres. It usually takes around 5 to 6 hours to complete, depending on your fitness level and how many stops you make to take in the views. The trail starts gently, winding through rolling hills and tussock grasslands. However, you quickly gain elevation and the track becomes much steeper, but the views become even more rewarding. At the summit, you'll be treated to an incredible 360-degree panorama of Lake Hawea, Lake Wanaka, and the surrounding Southern Alps. There are numerous false summits but keep going until you reach the pole, it's so worth it.

What to Bring:

Before embarking on this adventure, make sure you pack these essentials:

  • Hiking Boots: The trail steep and basically an intense ascent the entire way, so proper footwear is a must.

  • Weather Appropriate Clothing: Dress in layers. New Zealand's weather can be unpredictable, so be prepared for sunshine, rain, or even snow, depending on the season. We saw snow at the top in March which is just after summer!

  • Daypack: Bring a comfortable daypack to carry your essentials but pack as light as possible.

  • Water and Snacks: Stay hydrated with at least 2 litres of water and bring some energy-boosting snacks (bananas, protein bars etc.)

  • Sun Protection: Don't forget sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat. The New Zealand sun can be fierce and the UV is high.

  • Hiking Poles: These can help on the steeper sections, especially on the way down!

  • Map: While the trail is well-marked, it's a good idea to have the All Trails link downloaded so you can view it offline, just in case.

Additional Tips:

  • Start Early: To avoid the heat of the day and enjoy the sunrise, consider starting your hike in the early morning. Sunrise over the lakes would be a truly magical sight.

  • Weather Check: Weather conditions in the mountains can change rapidly. Check the forecast before you start, and if it looks dicey, consider postponing your hike.

  • Respect Nature: The Isthmus Peak area is ecologically sensitive. Stay on the marked track to protect the fragile alpine environment and don't interact with the wildlife.

  • Leave No Trace: Pack out everything you take in, including any trash. Let's keep this incredible place pristine.

Hiking Isthmus Peak is a fantastic experience and offers some of the best views in the Wanaka area. With the right gear and some preparation, you'll make memories that last a lifetime. Enjoy your journey to the top!
